Why farfetching?
Farfetching... that's not a real word, is it?
No, but it comes from these real words:
Farfetched
far-fetched (färfcht) adj
improbable in nature; unlikely; not naturally pertinent; forced; strained.
Farfetch
Far"fetch`\, v. t. [Far + fetch.]
To bring from far; to seek out studiously. [Obsolete]
So it's sort of a word, but you sort of made it up...?
I actually first heard of the word from a friend, Rachel, who read it in poet Mary Ann Hoberman's book, A House is a House for Me. It's a beautiful children's book with a wonderful (possibly hidden?) message: everything and everyone has a place, has a home... not just us humans. Read more in my extended post on the book.
OK, so what is farfetching.com all about?
Farfetching.com is a collection of my musings about the mystery, meaning and movement I find in various forms of media, from movies to music and more. (Can you tell I'm a fan of alliteration?) Farfetching is a made-up word that describes the improbable, not naturally pertinent and often forced/strained connections I will be making between far flung ideas only my neurotic wiring can trace. Calling all free associators everywhere... Ready, Set, Scatter!
And the rhyme & reason?
Essentially, I want to explore the messages various forms of media are trying to communicate. Sometimes the message is overt, at other times subliminal, but at all times we can attempt to decipher the meaning-creation and how we might apply these messages to our lives. For example, how do we live these messages out, either already or as a possible future? Have we already unknowingly incorporated them into our lives? How do our beliefs or the messages themselves affect the actions we take?
So the mystery, meaning and movement in the subtitle mean...?
Ah, yes, the 3 M's, as I call them. I view things in a Trinitarian manner, or simply in things of three. There is great mysteryor unknown in the universe, and how we relate to this can come out in fear, awe and other emotions, thoughts and actions. Our response to the mystery often leads to meaning-creation: What do we see or not see in the mystery? How are we to live in light or our (non/mis)understanding of the mystery? Which then leads to movement: How do we live in light of what we know or don't know, what we understand or don't understand, what we sense or not sense? If we don't pay attention to the dance between the 3 M's, we won't understand our movements, they will be devoid of meaning and we will lose our reverence or relation to the mystery that surrounds us.
And who are you?
I am an ordained Presbyterian pastor, film lover, music dabbler, outdoors adventurer and amateur sports artist. My qualifications to write this blog include being human, having a masters in divinity degree and a bachelors in political science. I claim family roots in the South, grew up in the Mid-Atlantic Region, have a heart for the West and currently reside in the Midwest. When I'm not thinking of the world in terms of filming, I'm playing a soundtrack in my head. More often than not it's both. Read more on my profile page.
